KNIT FOR THE NORTH DEVON HOSPICE
Unfortunately,
the Craft Group will not be able to hold its annual Knit and Natter afternoon
this February - another event to be missed.
However,
the Hospice will still need strips to make into welcome and warm blankets and
this year are also hoping to farm knitted chicks! So, why not set aside a morning or afternoon
to get out those knitting needles and wool [size 8 needles and 20 stitches] to
support the Hospice. Strips and chicks
can be left at the Shop or Chicane and will be taken to the Hospice when it is
possible to do so.
If you
would like to include a donation to the Hospice [usually at the afternoon a
minimum £5], this will also go to the Hospice, where it would be most welcome
and appreciated.
The
Hospice also has patterns for other items - Huggie Bunnies, Twiddle Muffs, Hat,
Scarf and Mitts. If you would like to
have a copy of their pattern book, contact Jess on [01271] 347213 or e-mail her

For the chick you will need:
Yellow or lemon double knit wool. A pair of size 11 UK needles. Orange felt
for the beaks, black felt or thread for the eyes and a cotton wool ball for the
head. Coloured ribbon to finish off and
a chocolate cream egg, for size fit.
- Body: Cast on 26 stitches.
- Knit I row.
- Increase 1
stitch at the beginning of every row until 42 stitches are on the needle.
- Cast off 11
stitches at the beginning of the next 2 rows [20st]
- Increase 1
stitch at the beginning of the next 4 row [24st]
- Knit 4 rows
- K2 then 2
together to last 2 stitches, Knit 2 [14st]
- Knit 4 rows
- Knit 2 then
2 together to last 2 stitches, knit 2
- Draw wool
through remaining stiches and pull tight.
- Sew round
the edge of the work leaving the cast on edge open so that egg can be inserted.
- Stuff the head with cotton wool ball and sew
around the neck and gather in.
- Sew 2 eyes
and stick on or sew a small diamond shaped piece of orange felt for the
beak. Try a few beaks to get the
size right!
- Tie a thin
piece of ribbon around the neck and tie in a bow.
Tip Try a creme
egg for size - you should be able to hold the chick by its
head without the egg falling out!
When the Craft Group is
able to meet again, there will be a couple of empty chairs, Our Anne and Doris,
who will be very much missed by us all and our thoughts are with their
families.

be holding Open House in the Manor Hall on that day from 1.45 p.m. onwards. Knitters can knit strips which the Hospice
turn into blankets and for this you will need an odd ball of wool and size 8
needles. But if you would like to come
for a coffee or tea and a cake, please do join us. All we ask is that you give a minimum
donation of £5.00 to the Hospice, take part in the raffle, enjoy coffee or tea
and cake in the company of others wishing to support this very worthwhile
cause.

KNIT & NATTER
Thanks to the good folks who turned up
at the Manor Hall with their knitting needles and wool, who took part in the
raffle and enjoyed tea and cakes, the Knit and Natter on the 25th February was
another successful afternoon. The North
Devon Hospice will benefit by a donation of £200 and four bags of brightly
coloured strips ready for sewing together to make multicoloured blankets. Thank you, all knitters!
It was good, once again, to be able to
welcome Ali Hunt from the Hospice who joined us, and not only did she tell us
of the current happenings at Deer Park, she set to and helped make the tea and
washed up! Thanks Ali.
The Hospice Knit and Natter has been
running for some years but the first time the village participated was in
February 2005, in conjunction with Sally Barten's Sunday School Pancake
Morning. Knitters organised sponsorship
which raised a great sum of £603, and Ali joined us for the first time! Knit In's, with Pancakes, followed for the
next two years, raising a further £1,300 for the Hospice.
As a
consequence of the first Knit In, when someone said "This is fun, we should do
it more often", the Monday afternoon Craft Group was formed, running
successfully ever since. Knit In's,
although sadly without pancakes, have also continued but rather than raising
money through sponsorship - it was felt that asking the same sponsors yet again
didn't seem right - a minimum donation of £5.00 was introduced and this
continues today, with well over £4,000 being raised over the years.
The craft group has enjoyed outings and
Christmas lunches together and last year visited Wells Cathedral, where the
Cathedral cat, Pangur, could be seen snoozing on his red carpet, and the
Bishop's Palace.
Why not come and enjoy a relaxing
afternoon with friends and refreshments and help decide to where the next trip
will be?

Berrynarbor Craft
and Art Group DISPLAY OF WORK
The Craft and Art Group are arranging a Display of
Work, showcasing art, embroidery, knitting, beading, lace-making, patchwork, weaving,
etc., to be held in the Manor Hall during the last week of October. It will open on Tuesday, 25th October and run daily
through to Friday, 28th, from 10.00 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. and 2.00
to 4.30 p.m., and on Saturday, 29th just from 10.00 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. Entry is £3.00 to include light refreshments,
coffee, tea and cakes,
there will be a raffle. Some of the items may be for sale. For those not able to visit during the weekdays,
there will be an evening session on Friday [25th] from 7.00 to 9.00
p.m. with a glass of wine and nibbles. Proceeds will go toward the refurbishment of the
Manor Hall. Please make a note of the dates and come along to
support not only the Manor Hall but the Craft Group, and encourage your family, friends and visitors to do likewise. We look forward to seeing you. |

CRAFTING IN BERRYNARBOR
Our Manor Hall is home to several
village and local crafting groups, to which everyone is warmly invited to join.
The Upholstery and Soft Furnishing Group meets
on Monday mornings, from 9.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. Have you an old chair, sofa or stool that
needs a face lift? Why not come along
and join this friendly self-help group, or just pop in to see what they are up
to. Upholstery materials such as webbing,
hessian, etc. are available, and help can be given with tooling to start you
off. The cost? £3.00 a session to include light
refreshments.
With nearly 20 members, the North Devon Spinners meet all day
on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays in the month when they spin, knit and weave using
all sorts of materials including cotton, silk and both sheep and alpaca
wool. Spinners pay £2.00 a day and
£1.00 a half day.
The Craft Group,
or Stitch and Bitch as it is affectionately known, meets every Monday afternoon
from 1.45 p.m. Just £2.00 per session
including tea, coffee and chocolate biscuits!
Mainly knitters, the group also has beaders, sewers, embroiderers and on
the first Monday in the month, watercolour painters, who also meet again during the morning of the
3rd Tuesday of each month and for which there is a charge of £5.00.
Never thought crafting was your kind of hobby? Everyone can achieve and enjoy such skills
so why not come along, join in, see what everyone is up to or try a taster
session to discover your talent!

ARTS & CRAFTS ACTIVITY DAY & KNIT
IN
What a wonderful day!
Saturday, 16th February for a change was
a dry day, and the Manor Hall was a veritable hive of industry. Everyone was busy 'doing it themselves'
under the guidance of local very talented craftspeople.
Entry at only £1, which included coffee
and biscuits or tea and cakes, participants, both young and older, were soon hard
at work. Under the watchful eye of Lani
Shepherd, colourful stained glass boats, butterflies and birds emerged. Sue Neale's group left with delightful posy
table arrangements and the menfolk as well as ladies sat down to make special
occasion cards with Margaret Walls.
Delicate sugar paste flowers and leaves will soon be decorating cakes
thanks to the expertise of Jan Quinn, whilst Penny Armitage helped the
stitchers produce a blue patchwork and spring daffodil, and others were
'stabbing' away making felt pictures with Sarah Davey.
Providing the workers and others who had
called in to see what was going on with teas, coffee, biscuits, cakes and soup
and roll lunches, Jan and Denny did a stalwart job with no time to relax at all
in the Berrynarbor Soup Kitchen whilst Lesley did a grand job manning the raffle
- always a good fund raiser.
All this was in aid of raising needed
funds for the Newsletter and thanks must go to everyone involved in any way for
the fantastic support which raised a healthy and much appreciated profit of
£350.
What a pleasure to see a gentleman
diligently stitching away at his daffodil, a young man having a very successful
go at arranging flowers and a birthday girl and guests all going home with
floral arrangements.
A great day thoroughly enjoyed by all!
The
Manor Hall was again the scene of activity on the Monday afternoon when the
Craft Group and friends nattered whilst knitting a quantity of colourful strips
raising over £150 for the North Devon Hospice.
Thank
you to everyone who has knitted strips and baby vests and bonnets - keep
knitting!

KNIT-IN WITH THE CRAFT GROUP
Clatter and Chatter, Click and Cluck, Draw and Jaw
Come and indulge your hobby with the Craft Group. We meet on Monday afternoons at the Manor Hall from 1.30 p.m. onwards, with friends and refreshments and all for just £2.00!
Last year saw us making two visits - the first to Morwellham Quay and the second to the National Trust
house at Killerton - as well as enjoying a festive lunch at Squires Restaurant in Braunton! Plans are in hand to take a leisurely barge trip on the canal at Tiverton this year.
So why not come and join us - there is no obligation to come each week, just when you can.
We shall be supporting the North Devon Hospice Knit-In on MONDAY, 18TH FEBRUARY when once again we'll be knitting colourful strips and everyone is invited and welcome to come and join us on that occasion from 2.00 p.m. There will be refreshments and a raffle and all we ask is for a minimum £5.00 donation for the Hospice. To knit all you will need is a pair of size 4 [8] needles and some colourful double knitting wool [if you don't have same, there will be some available].
And if you don't knit but would like to support this very worthy cause, please do come along and have a tea or coffee and biscuits with us and make a donation to the Hospice.

VESTS FOR AFRICA
Over the years the Craft Group, and friends, have knitted a
variety of items for charity - including Easter chickens [to be filled with
cream eggs] for the Barnstaple Soroptimists, bonnets for premature babies,
squares for blankets for Women's Refuge, bunting for the Big Arts Day at
Swindon, miniature lifeboat men for the
RNLI, and of course, strips for the Hospice. Now we are knitting vests!
These are for the Spencer
Trust and will be sent to Kisiizi Hospital, Uganda. Each newly born baby is given two vests,
often its only clothing and as an incentive for the mothers to bring their
babies for the course of inoculations, they are promised two further vests when
the course is completed.
These vests are knitted in 2 x 2 rib,
which can expand quite easily and fit them from birth to two years old!
So knitters, would you like to knit a vest or two? The pattern is very simple:
Materials:
- Odds and ends of coloured wool
- it says odds and ends but you will probably find you need about 100g. Any colour except plain white, which is not
a popular colour as it is for mourning.
- No. 9 or 3 knitting needles
- Medium crochet hook
Method:
- Cast on 80 stitches and rib 2
plain, 2 purl for 8".
- Cast on 14 stitches at the end
of the next two rows for the sleeves.
- Rib 16 rows.
- Rib 44, cast off 20, rib 44.
- Rib last 44 stitches for 31/2",
break off wool and knit the other shoulder in rib to match.
- Rib 44 stitches, cast on 20
stitches and then rib 44 stitches from the other shoulder.
- Rib 16 rows.
- Cast off 14 sleeve stiches at
beginning of next two rows.
- Rib until back matches front
and cast off.
- *Crochet round neck and put in
a crochet draw string, fastening at the back to prevent pulling out.
Any vests would be warmly received either at the craft group
Monday meetings [1.30-4.30 p.m.], with a member of the group or at the Shop.
* Don't worry if you don't
crochet, this can be done for you.

CRAFT GROUP & NORTH DEVON HOSPICE
KNIT-IN
The Craft Group, affectionately known as Stitch and Bitch,
began in 2005 following a poster and two very successful Knit-In's for the
North Devon Hospice.
It has continued to go from strength to
strength, meeting every Monday afternoon at the Manor Hall from 1.30 p.m. As well as enjoying 'whatever we do and
doing it together', we have in the last year visited Downes House at Crediton
and Knightshayes Court at Tiverton as well as enjoying a Christmas Lunch
together at The Royal Marine.
We have continued to support the Hospice
Knit-In raising in excess of £3,000 and miles of knitted colourful strips, and will
be doing so again this year! MONDAY,
27TH FEBRUARY is THE
chosen DAY and everyone is invited
to come and join us from 2.00 p.m.
There will be refreshments and a raffle and all you need to do is bring
some double knitting wool and a pair of size 8 [4] needles and a generous
donation [suggested minimum £5] for the Hospice. Please
do come and help us support this very worthy cause. See you there!

Friday 18th May, the Berrynarbor Craft Group hired a small minibus and had a
splendid day out at The Americans
The
highlight for many of us was the recreation of a series of period rooms showing
how Americans lived from the colonial era to the eve of the Civil War. Only time and weather prevented us from
exploring the beautiful extensive grounds - maybe a good excuse to make another
visit?
